This website was launched in July 2011, to provide information about anything to do with Orpington, Kent and its surrounding areas - history, local news, community issues, activities, events and lots more! It was created by this resident who has always lived in the area, and in Green Street Green since 1979, and who currently manages it alone, trying to keep it as up to date as possible - so apologies for the occasions when some of the information is out of date. If you do notice anything wrong, please let me know, as there are quite a few
pages and it is difficult to continually check all of them! You can also like Orpington Community on Facebook and follow on Twitter.
If there is anyone out there who would be willing to help manage this website, please do contact me.
Although run by someone who is passionate about creating awareness of all the exciting things happening in our local area and encouraging community engagement in
maintaining and improving where we live, it is for those out there 'in the community' to provide or suggest information they want to see available on this site so it can be added.
The Home page provides the latest news and local activity items.
Events (sub-tab on the 'Home' menu) lists regular and annual activities and has links to other websites for more information. Do tell us about any events and local club activities not listed - we want it to be as comprehensive as possible.
Orpington News & Views provide articles of local and wider interest - please post your comments and alert us to any important issues we miss. If you have
interesting stories to tell, do email them so they can be posted on the blog pages or the specific local area page.
Local Information is a resource for access to local history, photographs and various regular local activities - with lots of links to more information on other websites.
If you are interested in improving your local environment, then Bromley Council and other service providers are more likely to be influenced by community organisations than individuals so, if you want to be involved, contact your local community organisations - or set one up - and work with a committed group.
The Useful Links pages have hyperlinks to other websites for local information, community organisations, clubs, services and direct links to council information etc. If you are involved with a local organisation or want to recommend a local business or tradesman which is not listed, please complete the form on the Contact Us page, including the website address, and we will add the link on the relevant page. This is FREE OF CHARGE but limited to local information and small businesses, not the likes of large supermarkets and major chains. If you do not have a website address or Facebook page, other contact details can be posted.
WARNING: It is adviseable to avoid publicising personal telephone numbers or residential addresses.

In February 2013, with Darren Weale (CoolLocal), the Orpington Tweet Up was started. The aim of these meetings is to promote the sensible and effective use of social media to publicise the work of local organisations, activities and projects. There is an impressive number of projects and activities happening in and around Orpington and often those involved think everyone knows about them but this is invariably not the case! Social media can create awareness quickly and build interest in a way that other media cannot. However ALL channels of communication need to be used, as they each have their own advantages. The Tweet Ups are ad hoc, starting with six at different venues around Orpington in 2013. In March 2014, a regular venue was found at The Greenwood Community Centre in Green Street Green and they occur every 3-4 months. They are open and FREE to anyone who wishes to attend but, in order to estimate catering needs (tea, coffee and biscuits), we ask people to let us know they intend to come along by booking on Eventbrite (search for Orpington Tweet Up).
