Orpington High Street repairs
30 November 2012
Bromley Council are carrying out some essential repair work to the raised platform outside WH Smith this weekend starting after 6pm on Saturday. The letter below was sent to Orpington Business Forum, who sought clarification from the Council. OBF also expressed displeasure to the Council about the work being carried out in the lead up to Christmas, but were unable to stop the work.
"The works are being undertaken outside WH Smith, where the raised block section is being removed and replaced with ‘black top’. These remedial works are designed to ensure that the peak Christmas trading period is not disrupted with repair works.
The work in the High Street will start on Saturday at or after 6 p.m. and this is to ensure that the Saturday retail business day is not affected. Work will continue through the night and into the early hours of Sunday morning. The repair works will then be completed on Sunday and although the road closure order is for the whole of Sunday, the road will be re-opened as soon as the work is complete and this could be as early as late Sunday morning but may obviously be later than this. We are hopeful that thework will be completed late Sunday morning.
The High Street will be closed to through traffic because of the work, with theroad effectively closed from the mini roundabouts towards either end of the High Street, at the junctions with Homefield Rise and Church Hill respectively. Motorists will be able to access and park in the High Street, with the area near the war memorial unaffected and, at the other end of the High Street, access would also be possible.
Buses will operate as normal until the road closure commences on Saturday evening and they will remain on diversion until Monday morning.
The works will ensure that there is a safe surface for vehicles and pedestrians while a permanent solution is found going forwards, at the expense of the contractor, rather than the Council.
I apologise for the confusion the notification letter may have caused but we have tried to minimise this potentially disruptive work. The work will then mean that there should not be any highway works going into the peak Christmas shopping period.
