People of Beckenham get active for Garbage Girls
28 October 2011
A new shopping experience comes to Beckenham in the form of Citygate’s Craft Fayre on Saturday 19 November 2011.
Citygate Church has teamed up with artists and crafters to present a Craft Fayre that will not only benefit those in search of that special Christmas or birthday present, but will also raise money for a charity in Egypt, the Garbage Girls Project.
Affectionately renamed the Egyptian Gorgeous Girls by Citygate, the project helps to address issues faced by some of the 3 million children aged 13-18 who live and work on the streets of Cairo. Money raised will help to get the girls back into education, provide food for their families and equip them for a brighter future.
The Craft Fayre is a fantastic opportunity to buy original, handmade gifts at affordable prices. There will also be a Children’s craft area where they will be able to make their own gifts.
As well as gifts galore there will also be cakes and nibbles, mulled wine and music, a great opportunity for people to come and browse, mingle, sing and remember what Christmas is all about!
For further information about the event, please contact: Citygate Church - Email: [email protected] Tel: 020 8662 6850

The Garbage Girls Project
Over 3 million children, aged between 13 and 18, live and work the streets of Cairo where they are vulnerable to violence, exploitation and disease. Many turn to drugs to cope with their stressful and precarious lives.
The project currently takes care of 160 girls and 20 boys. Many of the girls have had to leave education in order to help provide for their family.
In order for the girls to re-enter education and become equipped for a brighter future, the Garbage City project provides monthly food bags for the girls’ families, clean clothing and much needed medicines as many of the children contract Diabetes and Hepatitis C through their work on the rubbish dump.
It costs just £55 to send a girl to school for a year and that includes fees, uniform, bag, books & pens
Food bag for a family just £17 for a month
Medication for one month £20 per child
